Men's Swim Makes Gains In Norwich Dual Meet Friday

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's swimming and diving team took a setback to a well-rounded Norwich University team (NOR), in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) dual meet, held inside the Bruyette Natatorium, on the campus of USJ Friday night.

Senior captain Jacob Wyse (Broad Brook, Conn.) led the way for the Blue Jays with a win and several other solid finishes. Wyse claimed the win in the 100-Yard Backstroke in 59.45 seconds, the only swimmer in the sub-one minute tier. He also touched the wall more than two seconds ahead of the second-place swimmer. Wyse was runner-up in the 200 Freestyle as well, scoring 17 points for the Blue Jays. He was also one of four USJ swimmers who impressed in the 200 Medley Relay, placing a close third in the event. He was joined by senior captain Brendan Lynch (Watertown, Conn.), junior Maksym Ugrak (Newington, Conn.), and junior Aaron Gauvin (Berlin, Conn.). Ugrak scored an additional 17 points for the Blue Jays with a second-place swim in the 50 Butterfly in 26.96, less than a second away from the victory.

Norwich University vs. University of Saint Joseph
Score: NOR 933, USJ 410
Location: Bruyette Natatorium | West Hartford, Conn.

COACH QUOTE [Brenda Straker] "We knew it was going to be tough with the men because of the numbers and size of Norwich. Norwich is a powerhouse in the GNAC. We loaded our relays, and I think we were competitive in them. They were excited to swim against Norwich, because we felt like for the first time in four years we could be respectable. Even though we have a small roster, we are feeling impactful now. They're making a difference…they're coming ready to race. Before it was just 'oh, we are a new men's team' and we were kind of going through the motions. Now we feel legitimate, and we are going out there to show other teams how established we are."
