Men’s Soccer Shuts Out Albertus Magnus, 1-0, to Advance to GNAC Semifinals

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The top-seeded University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's soccer team held off eighth-seeded intrastate rival Albertus Magnus College (Albertus), 1-0, in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Quarterfinals Saturday afternoon at the USJ Soccer Field in West Hartford, Conn. With the victory, the Blue Jays advanced to the semifinals for the sixth straight season, improving to 11-4-2 overall. The Falcons concluded their 2025 campaign at 8-8-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Albertus generated early pressure, forcing sophomore goalkeeper Will Slayton (Manchester, Conn.) to make two saves within the opening 12 minutes.

  • USJ was then handed a golden opportunity to break the deadlock in the 18th minute after sophomore midfielder Mario Milardo (Middletown, Conn.) was brought down in the box by the Albertus goalkeeper. Senior defender Nicholas Simpson (Mansfield, Conn.) calmly stepped to the spot and buried the penalty into the bottom-left corner to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead.

  • The Falcons continued to push for an equalizer before halftime, but Slayton turned away two more shots to preserve the advantage heading into the break.

  • Both sides traded chances early in the second half, yet neither could find the back of the net. The USJ back line stayed organized and resilient down the stretch, withstanding late Albertus pressure to secure the shutout and quarterfinal victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Simpson scored his fourth goal of the season—all from the penalty spot.

  • Slayton played the full 90 minutes in goal, earning the win with seven saves.

  • USJ outshot Albertus 17-12.

  • The Blue Jays held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
