WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's soccer team battled back from an early deficit to earn a 1-1 draw against Emmanuel College (Emmanuel) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Saturday afternoon at the USJ Soccer Field in West Hartford, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays move to 4-3-1 overall and 3-0-1 in GNAC play, while the Saints stand at 3-1-5 overall and 1-1-2 in the league.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Emmanuel opened the scoring in the 14th minute after being awarded a penalty. Rafael Matamoros converted from the spot to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

  • The Blue Jays generated several chances in the first half, including shots from senior forward Emmanuel Ofori (East Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore midfielder Mario Milardo (Middletown, Conn.), but trailed 1-0 at halftime.

  • USJ equalized just four minutes into the second half as Ofori fed a perfect through ball to Milardo, who calmly slotted home his fourth goal of the season in the 50th minute.

  • Sophomore goalkeeper Will Slayton (Manchester, Conn.) was called on multiple times to preserve the tie, making seven saves on the day, including three in the second half.

  • Both teams pushed for a late winner, with USJ firing 12 shots in the second half alone, but neither side could find the breakthrough, ending in a 1-1 draw.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Milardo's tally was his fourth of the season.

  • Ofori collected his third assist of the year.

  • USJ outshot Emmanuel, 19-13, and earned a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

  • Slayton played all 90 minutes in goal for the Blue Jays, stopping seven shots to pick up the tie (3-2-1)

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays continue GNAC play on Wednesday, Oct. 1, when they travel to face Lasell University. Opening kickoff against the Lasers at Taylor Field in Newton, Mass., is set for 3:00 p.m.
