Ofori Nets Brace, Men's Soccer Drops 3-2 Decision at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's soccer team battled back late but came up just short, falling 3-2 to Springfield College on Tuesday night in the teams' final non-conference game at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex in Springfield, Mass. With the result, the Blue Jays dropped to 2-3-0, while the Pride improved to 4-2-0.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Springfield struck early in the fifth minute when Connor Policarpio converted off a pass from Tommy Quiterio to make it 1-0.

  • Less than three minutes later, Aidan Hallinan doubled the lead for the Pride on an assist from Policarpio.

  • USJ responded in the 14th minute as senior forward Emmanuel Ofori (East Hartford, Conn.) finished off a pass from sophomore midfielder Nico Hamzavi (West Hartford, Conn.) to cut the deficit to 2-1.

  • The Blue Jays continued to generate chances, including an effort from Ofori that rattled the woodwork just a minute later.

  • After a long scoreless stretch, Springfield restored its two-goal cushion in the 87th minute when Talan Bradley scored off a feed from Parker Gustine.

  • USJ refused to quit, with Ofori striking again in the 89th minute on an assist from sophomore midfielder Mario Milardo (Middletown, Conn.) to make it 3-2.

  • Despite late pressure, the Blue Jays couldn't find the equalizer as the Pride held on for the 3-2 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Ofori led USJ with two goals.

  • Hamzavi and Milardo each collected an assist.

  • Junior goalkeeper Andres Diosa (Cheshire, Conn.) got the start in net, picking up the loss (1-1-0) after tallying eight saves.

  • Springfield outshot USJ, 21-9, including an 11-4 edge in shots on goal.

  • The Pride also held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Blue Jays return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Friday, September 19, traveling to Northfield, Vt., for a matchup against Norwich University. Opening kickoff against the Cadets on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium is set for 7:00 p.m.
