Men's Soccer Battles To Scoreless Draw With SJC Saturday

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw against Saint Joseph's College of Maine (SJC) Saturday afternoon during Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on the USJ Soccer Field in West Hartford, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays move to 11-1-3 overall and 9-1-3 in the GNAC, while the Monks move to 10-3-3 overall and 10-2-1 in the conference.

KEY MOMENTS 

  • The game started as a battle of the midfield, as neither team could generate a shot on goal in the opening 15 minutes.
  • Freshman midfielder Matthew Dima (Oxford, Conn.) nearly opened the scoring at the 17:46 mark, as his shot was well blocked by the SJC defense.
  • Sophomore forward Emmanuel Ofori (East Hartford, Conn.) saw himself in a great goal scoring opportunity moments later, but the Monks goalkeeper Liam Foley (Middleton, Mass.) made an excellent point-blank save, keeping the game scoreless.
  • The two teams would continue to trade opportunities late in the half, but neither team could find the back of the net as the Blue Jays and Monks entered the halftime break deadlock at 0-0.
  • Senior goalkeeper Jose Miguel Garcia Martin (Madrid, Spain) was called into action early in the second half, but made a comfortable save off a header at the 49:56 mark.
  • Garcia Martin came up huge for the Blue Jays later on in the match, making a pair of reflex saves, to preserve the 0-0 score entering the final 20 minutes.
  • The Blue Jays would generate chances late, but would not be able to test Foley as neither team could find the game-winner, settling for a 0-0 draw.

NOTES 

  • Garcia Martin tallied four saves to keep his third shutout of the year and move to 4-0-2.
  • The Blue Jays held an 18-13 edge in shots.
  • With the result, the Monks maintain its lead in the all-time series, 5-1-1.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays round out the 2023 regular season with a trip to Paxton, Mass., on Tuesday, Oct. 24, to face Anna Maria College. Kickoff against the AMCATS on Capraso Field is set for 6:00 p.m.
