Men's Soccer Takes Down NEC, 4-0, During Senior Night

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's soccer team took care of buisness against New England College (NEC), defeating the Pilgrims 4-0 Wednesday night during Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on the USJ Soccer Field in West Hartford, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays move to 10-1-1 overall and 8-1-1 in conference play while the Pilgrims drop to 5-4-4 overall and 4-3-3 in the GNAC. Prior to the game, the USJ department of athletics honored seniors Jose Miguel Garcia Martin (Madrid, Spain), Juan Torres (Hartford, Conn.), Mouhammed Moukhtar (Bouar, Central Africa Republic), Henry McGarrah V (Hartford, Conn.) and Dane Stephens (Linstead, Jamaica).

KEY MOMENTS

  • USJ wasted little time finding the back of the net, as Juan Torres shifted past the NEC defense, cutting inside and curling a strike off the left post and in, establishing a 1-0 Blue Jays lead at the 7:40 mark.
  • NEC nearly found the equalizer, as Logan Cassin (Penacook, N.H.) guided his header off a corner just high of the crossbar at the 15:31 mark.
  • The Blue Jays continued to pile on the pressure though, as McGarrah V found himself one-on-one with the NEC goalkeeper, but his shot missed just wide preserving the score line.
  • Sophomore forward Emmanuel Ofori (East Hartford, Conn.) also generated a chance off a corner kick, but his header also missed just high, keeping the Blue Jays lead at 1-0 entering the halftime break.
  • USJ carried its momentum into the second half, increasing the lead to 2-0 at the 56:10 mark, as Ofori played towards graduate student midfielder Michael Torres (Hartford, Conn.) who let the ball roll between his legs to the feet of Stephens, who fired his shot into the back of the net.
  • NEC would test Garcia Martin moments later, but the senior made a pair of fine saves to preserve the 2-0 lead.
  • The Blue Jays quickly increased the gap to 3-0 after Michael Torres looped a ball to Stephens on the left side of the box before Stephens curled a strike into the top right corner with 66:17 on the clock.
  • USJ put the game to rest at the 72:39 mark, as freshman midfielder Matthew Dima (Oxford, Conn.) corralled a loose ball inside the six-yard box before tapping in the easy goal, sending the Blue Jays home with a 4-0 victory.

NOTES

  • Juan Torres netted his second goal of the year, while Stephens scored his seventh and eighth and Dima scored his fourth.
  • Michael Torres was a playmaking machine in the midfield, dishing out two assists.
  • Garcia Martin recorded three saves to pick up his second shutout of the year, moving to 3-0-0.
