Dane Stephens Earns GNAC Rookie Of The Week Honors
WINTHROP, Mass. - Sophomore forward Dane Stephens (Jamaica) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's soccer team was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week, it was announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon in its fifth weekly report of the 2021 season. It marks the first career GNAC weekly honor for Stephens, who currently leads the league in assists with seven, and the third straight week a USJ men's soccer player has picked up a weekly accolade.
Stephens registered two goals and an assist for a five-point week to help power the Blue Jays to a 1-0-1 record in GNAC action en route to earning his first career GNAC Rookie of the Week honor. The 5-10 sophomore from Jamaica opened the week scoring USJ's lone goal in a 2-1 road setback to intrastate and conference rival Albertus Magnus on Wednesday night. He followed that up with an assist in the 44th minute and later found the back of the net in the 73rd minute to close the scoring in a 4-0 route of Colby-Sawyer on the road on Saturday to get the Blue Jays back in the win column and improve their overall record to 6-2-1 on the season.
Stephens now has 11 total points on the season with two goals and seven assists, good for second-best on the team behind senior forward DeAnte Anderson (Bloomfield, Conn.), who leads the league with 28 points (13 goals, 2 assists). Stephens currently leads the GNAC with seven assists which also ranks him 13th in the nation in that statistical category.
