Agbetossou Awarded First-Career GNAC Player Of The Week

WINTHROP, Mass. – Junior midfielder Joel Agbetossou (Hartford, Conn.) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's soccer team was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Soccer Player of the Week, it was announced Monday by conference officials. It marks the first-ever conference accolade for the former Bulkeley High School Bulldog, who has already set career-highs in goals (three) and points (seven) as the Blue Jays equaled their best seven-game start in program history (5-1-1).

The Blue Jays had an ideal 2-0-0 week, outscoring their opponents, 9-3 despite playing both matches away from home. Agbetossou scored all three of his goals this season over the last two contests, including his first-career multi-goal game in a 6-2 rout of fellow GNAC school, Lasell University on September 22. The first strike found the back of the net in the 19th minute, one that eventually served as the game-winning goal, the second of his career.

"Joel really grasped his opportunity as a result of some of our injuries," said fourth-year men's soccer head coach, Paul Wright. "His enthusiasm and work ethic has been infectious in practice, and we are now seeing that translate into competition. We are hopeful he can continue his form. He's a very important part of our squad."

Agbetossou followed it up with a key first-half goal in the 20th minute against Elms College on September 25. The Blue Jays went on to win that one, 3-1. The 5-6 Hartford native is tied for second on the team in goals, and sits second in points through the team's first seven fixtures. USJ has now claimed back-to-back GNAC Men's Soccer Player of the Week Awards for the first time in school history.

UP NEXT
Agbetossou and the Blue Jays are headed 40 miles south for a highly anticipated GNAC matchup with intrastate foe Albertus Magnus College, on Wednesday, September 29. Kickoff is expected at 7:00 p.m. under the lights of Celentano Field.
