Men’s Lacrosse Holds Off Nichols, 7–4, on Wednesday

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's lacrosse team extended its winning streak to four games, defeating Nichols College, 7–4, in non-conference action on Wednesday at the USJ Lacrosse Field. With the victory, the Blue Jays improved to 6–1 overall, while the Bison dropped to 3–4 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Nichols struck first, scoring at the 12:57 mark to take a 1–0 lead.
  • USJ answered moments later during a man-up opportunity, as freshman midfielder Brady Stevens (Laconia, N.H.) found senior attack Freeman Johnson (Swanzey, N.H.) out front. Johnson rifled a shot into the net to tie the game at one with 7:28 remaining in the quarter.
  • The Bison regained the lead with 6:12 left in the period and held USJ scoreless the rest of the frame to carry a 2–1 advantage into the second.
  • The Blue Jays wasted little time responding, as junior midfielder Brenden Tedeschi (Orange, Vt.) wrapped around the cage and finished to even the score at two with 10:30 to play in the half.
  • Less than a minute later, Tedeschi struck again in similar fashion to give USJ its first lead, 3–2, at the 9:58 mark. He completed his hat trick at 7:30 with a solo effort to push the advantage to 4–2.
  • Johnson capped the second-quarter surge with another man-up goal, this time off an assist from sophomore attack Dominic Oakes (Southington, Conn.), sending USJ into halftime with a 5–2 lead.
  • Offense was limited in the third quarter, with Nichols scoring the lone goal on a man-up opportunity at the 4:51 mark to cut the deficit to 5–3 heading into the fourth.
  • Senior attack Nick Pestrichello (Newington, Conn.) halted the momentum, scoring at 9:56 of the final period to extend the lead to 6–3.
  • Nichols responded with 5:01 remaining, but the USJ defense held firm down the stretch. Tedeschi sealed the victory with a man-up goal with 46 seconds left, securing the 7–4 win.
