Men's Lacrosse Stifles Dean, 15-5, During GNAC Play Tuesday Afternoon

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's lacrosse team utlized a stifling defense to take down Dean College (Dean), 15-5, Tuesday afternoon during Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play at the USJ Lacrosse Field in West Hartford. With the result, USJ improves to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while the Bulldogs drop to 2-4 and 0-3 in GNAC action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Dean grabbed the early lead, scoring at the 9:20 mark to take a 1-0 edge.
  • USJ quickly answered as junior attack Adam Pelletier (North Kingstown, R.I.) picked out junior midfielder Brenden Tedeschi (Orange, Vt.), who rifled a shot into the goal with 8:38 on the clock. Neither offense would be able to score during the rest of the quarter, as the game entered the second stanza deadlocked at 1-1.
  • The Blue Jays struck first to open the second, as freshman attack Landon Lapointe (Lutz, Fla.) scored a solo goal at the 10:42 mark to establish a 2-1 Blue Jays' lead.
  • Sophomore attack Dominic Oakes (Southington, Conn.) followed up with a man-up goal with 8:33 left in the half, before Tedeschi netted his second goal of the game at the 7:23 mark, increasing the gap to 4-1.
  • The Bulldogs put a stop to the run with a strike at the 6:07 mark, but Lapointe answered with a man-down goal off an assist senior attack Freeman Johnson (Swanzey, N.H.)  to reestablish a three-goal edge, 5-2.
  • Johnson then found the back of himself to round out the half, scoring with 48 seconds left to send USJ into the halftime break with a 6-2 lead.
  • Tedeschi carried the momentum into the third quarter, rounding out his hattrick at the 14:17 mark to increase the gap to 7-2.
  • Dean answered with a man-up goal, but USJ countered with a man-up strike itself, as Oakes found graduate student attack Brycen Kennedy (Southington, Conn.), who rifled a shot into the net and give USJ an 8-3 lead with 8:57 left in the third.
  • The Blue Jays continued to stifle the Bulldog's offense, while Lapointe completed his hattrick at the 4:08 mark, extending the advantage to 9-3 entering the fourth quarter.
  • Lapointe continued his impressive day, scoring four the fourth time at the 12:51 mark of the fourth quarter, increasing the gap to 10-3.
  • Dean answered with a goal, but Tedeschi found the back of the net again to reestablish a seven-point lead,11-4, with 10:48 left to play.
  • The goal sparked a stretch of five unanswered USJ goals, as freshman midfielder AJ Valone (Sayville, N.Y.), Lapointe, senior attack Quinn Perkins (Norwich, Conn.), and Kennedy all notched goals to increase the USJ lead to 15-4.
  • The Bulldogs would score for the final time with 34 seconds left, but the strike was not enough as USJ secured the victory, 15-5.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 

  • Lapointe paced the Blue Jays with a career-high five goals.
  • Tedeschi continued his impressive junior campaign, scoring four goals to increase his team-leading tally to 13.
  • Pelletier was a playmaking maestro, dishing out a career-high three assists.
  • Valone scored his first career-goal.
  • Kennedy dished out a game-high four assists.
  • Junior faceoff specialist Benjamin Bausch (Holliston, Mass.) collected a game-high eight ground balls.
  • Senior defenseman Nick Wesley (Wakefield, Mass.) continued to be a defensive-force for USJ, causing a game-high four turnovers.
  • Bausch led USJ at the faceoff "X," going 10-for-15.
  • Junior goalkeeper Noah Isleib (Easton, Mass.) earned the win (4-1), making eight saves while allowing five goals.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays head on the road, traveling to Boston, Mass., for a GNAC matchup against Emmanuel College on Saturday, March 14. Opening faceoff against the Saints at Roberto Clemente Field is set for noon.
