Strong Second Powers Men's Lacrosse Past Norwich, 11-10, Saturday
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's lacrosse team used a stellar second-half to erase a four-goal deficit and defeat Norwich University (Norwich) on the road, 11-10, Saturday afternoon during Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play at Sabine Field in Northfield, Vt. With the result, the Blue Jays improved to 7-7 overall and 5-3 in the GNAC, while the Cadets dropped to 4-10 on the year, and 2-6 in conference play.
KEY MOMENTS
- USJ wasted little time finding the back of the net, as graduate student midfielder Aidan D'Amato (Tolland, Conn.) scored a solo goal at the 12:34 mark, establishing a 1-0 USJ lead.
- D'Amato then turned provider, picking out a pass to classmate Kevin Carr (West Hartford, Conn.) who rifled a strike into the net to increase the lead to 2-0 with 6:10 on the clock.
- Carr beat the buzzer to close out the first quarter, netting his second goal of the game with one second left in the first, increasing the gap to 3-0 entering the second quarter.
- Norwich responded in full force in the second frame, scoring five unanswered goals to hold a 5-3 edge at the 2:13 mark.
- Carr rounded out his hattrick with 1:28 on the clock, but Norwich would score again to close out the half, taking a 6-4 edge into the halftime break.
- The Cadets carried the momentum into the third quarter, scoring two rapid fire goals to extend the gap to 8-4 at the 11:08 mark.
- USJ fired back, as D'Amato scored his second goal of the game, cutting the core to 8-5 with 9:57 on the clock.
- Freshman attack Dominic Oakes (Southington, Conn.) then found the back of the net, before senior midfielder Christian Decker (Bristol, Conn.) scored back-to-back goals, erasing the four-goal deficit and tying the game at 8-8 entering the fourth quarter.
- D'Amato and Carr continued their stellar games in the fourth, netting back-to-back strikes to establish a 10-8 USJ lead with 11:28 left to play.
- Norwich would close the gap back to one, but D'Amato tallied his fourth goal of the game at the 2:25 mark, increasing the edge to two, 11-9.
- The Cadets again closed the gap to one, 11-10, with 1:18 to play, but the USJ defense stood strong, not allowing the hosts a chance to tie the game, as the Blue Jays took home the victory, 11-10.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- D'Amato paced the team with seven points off four goals and three assists.
- Carr also scored a team-high four goals, while corralling a team-best six ground balls.
- Sophomore midfielder Michael Decker (Bristol, Conn.) caused a team-high three turnovers.
- Norwich narrowly won the battle at the faceoff "X", posting a 13-for-24 mark.
- Graduate student Trey McCann (Simsbury, Conn.) played all 60 minutes in the cage for USJ, recording 13 saves.
UP NEXT
The Blue Jays round out the 2025 regular season in West Hartford on Wednesday, April 23, against conference rivals Albertus Magnus College. Opening faceoff against the Falcons at the USJ Lacrosse Field is slated for 4:00 p.m.
