Cummings Drops Career-High 30 Points, Powers Men's Hoops Past Dean Tuesday Night

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's basketball team extended its winning streak to eight games, taking down Dean College (Dean), 93-68, during Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Tuesday night inside James A. Calhoun Gymnasium in West Hartford, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays moved to 15-5 on the season and 9-0 in GNAC play, while the Bulldogs moved to 13-7 overall and 5-5 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • USJ jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead, as freshman forward Adelphe Cisse (Pointe-Noire, Congo) threw down a one-handed slam at the 17:24 mark of the first half.
  • The Blue Jays extended the gap to 13-4 when freshman guard Jakari Tertulien (Bridgeport, Conn.) capped off a 6-2 stretch, as the game hit a media timeout with 15:05 left on the first-half clock.
  • Dean responded with a 6-0 run, closing the gap to 18-14 at the 12-minute mark.
  • USJ fired back though, utilizing a 9-2 scoring stretch, finished off by a spot-up triple from junior guard Lence Altenor (Everett, Mass.), to establish a 27-16 edge with 9:23 left in the first half.
  • The Blue Jays began to break open the advantage, as senior wing Kevin Cummings (Portsmouth, N.H.) knocked down back-to-back triples, sparking a 10-0 run, forcing the Bulldogs to call a timeout down 38-19, with 5:21 on the clock.
  • USJ kept its foot on the gas, closing the half on a 8-4 run, featuring three points from sophomore forward Jalen Holmes (Cherry Hill, N.J.) to take a 51-27 edge into the halftime break.
  • Dean would open the second half strong, using a 8-0 stretch to close the gap to 16, 51-35, with 15:54 on the clock.
  • USJ would begin to regain their stride, as Cummings and Altenor drained back-to-back three-pointers to reestablish a 20-point lead, 59-39, with 12:20 left to play.
  • Cummings continued to be lethal shooting the ball, scoring seven-straight points to extend the advantage to 24, 73-48, at the 8:23 mark.
  • The two teams would go on to trade baskets, as Dean closed the deficit to 25, 84-59, with 4:22 left to play.
  • However, the Bulldogs would not get any closer, as USJ secured the victory, 93-68.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 

  • Cummings scored a career-high 30 points to pace the Blue Jays.
  • Holmes also scored a career-high, posting 15 points.
  • Tertulien hauled in a team-high seven rebounds.
  • Feldrappe dished out a career-high 11 assists.
  • USJ outshot Dean, 55.6% (35-of-63) to 37.9% (25-of-66).
  • The Bulldogs and Blue Jays were level in rebounds, 36-36.
