WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's basketball team picked up its 70th consecutive Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) regular season victory, taking down Mitchell College (Mitchell), 87-70, Wednesday night inside James A. Calhoun Gymnasium in West Hartford, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays moved to 14-5 on the season and 8-0 in GNAC play, while the Mariners moved to 11-7 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a back-and-forth start to the game, junior forward Friedrich Feldrappe (Berlin, Germany) and senior guard Kevin Cummings (Portsmouth, N.H.) would drain back-to-back triples, establishing a 13-8 USJ lead at the 12:58 mark.
- Mitchell would cut the gap to three, but another Feldrappe triple increased the advantage to six, 18-12, with 10:14 left in the half.
- The two teams continued to trade shots, as Cummings drove to the basket and finished through contact before converting the and-one, establishing a 29-20 Blue Jays lead with 6:40 on the clock.
- The Blue Jays would begin to pull away, using a 9-2 stretch, featuring buckets from sophomore center Tony Acevedo (San Fernando Valley, Calif.), junior guard Lence Altenor (Everett, Mass.), freshman forward Adelphe Cisse (Pointe-Noire, Congo) and freshman guard Jakari Tertulien (Bridgeport, Conn.) to hold a 40-26 lead at the 3:23 mark.
- USJ would increase the edge to 18, as Cisse sunk a contact layup, establishing a 47-29 lead with 1:09 left in the half.
- The score would hold as the Blue Jays entered the halftime break with a 47-29 lead.
- Cisse started the second half strong for USJ, using a solo 4-2 stretch, finished off by a one-handed dunk, to increase the lead to 51-30 at the 17:14 mark.
- The Blue Jays extended the lead to 25 after a 7-0 run, as sophomore guard Alijah Lovelace (Brooklyn, N.Y.) knocked down a pair of free throws to establish a 58-33 scoreline with 14:13 left in the half.
- The two teams would begin to trade buckets, as an Acevedo layup saw USJ hold a 74-46 lead with 8:28 on the clock.
- The Blue Jays increased the lead to 30, 84-54, after freshman guard Rodney Desir (Bridgeport, Conn.) sunk a driving layup and Cummings drilled a triple at the 4:11 mark.
- The Mariners would close the game on a 16-2 run, but the deficit was too great to overcome as USJ secured the 87-70 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Cummings paced the team with a game-high 22 points.
- Altenor, Cisse and Feldrappe joined him in double-figures, scoring 17, 15 and 10 points, respectively.
- Feldrappe notched a double-double after hauling in a game-high 11 rebounds.
- He nearly posted a triple-double, tying his career-high of nine assists.
- Cummings recorded a team-best three steals.
- USJ outshot Mitchell, 53.2% (33-of-62) to 41.2% (28-of-68).
- The Blue Jays outrebounded the Mariners, 39-35.
- The two teams were evenly matched inside the paint, scoring 44 points each.
