Calhoun To Be Enshrined In Collegiate Basketball Hall Of Fame
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Nine college basketball icons, including former and inaugural University of Saint Joseph (USJ) head men's basketball coach Jim Calhoun, have been selected to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2022.
Calhoun, a 2005 inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, was part of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame's Founding Class in 2006, but he will be formally honored this year, along with 2006 founding class member Roy Williams.
In addition to Calhoun and Williams, the Class of 2022 includes former players Richard Hamilton of Connecticut, Larry Miller of North Carolina, Frank Selvy of Furman, and the late Jimmy Walker of Providence, along with coaches John Beilein, Jerry Krause and Lon Kruger.
The Class of 2022 will be enshrined on November 20 in Kansas City as part of National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame Weekend, which also features the annual Hall of Fame Classic tournament.
After 14 seasons as the head coach at Northeastern University, where he transitioned the men's basketball program from the Division II ranks to one of the top Division I mid-major programs in the nation, followed by 26 seasons and three NCAA Division I National Championships (1999, 2004, 2011) at the helm of the University of Connecticut (UConn), Coach Calhoun announced his retirement from coaching in 2012.
That was until September 2017 when Coach Calhoun came out of retirement and was hired at USJ as Men's Basketball Consultant as USJ began to transition to a fully coeducational institution. He was then named USJ's first-ever head men's basketball coach one year later in September 2018 and led the startup program for three-plus seasons before recently stepping down in November 2021.
In three-plus seasons as the head coach of the Blue Jays, Calhoun concluded his tenure at USJ with a record of 47-17 (.734), leading the Blue Jays to the 2020 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in just the program's second-ever season. In total, Calhoun boasts 920 career wins as a head coach spanning 44 seasons at Northeastern, UConn and Saint Joseph, putting him sixth on the current NCAA all-divisions wins list. He is also one of just six coaches in NCAA Division I history with three or more national titles.
