Before USJ: Simmons was a star for the now newly named 'Nor'easters' of Newington High School, where he led the squad to a perfect 20-0 season, and a trip to the CIAC Class L Semifinals, before losing to Middletown in overtime. Simmons nearly sent the doors off Gibney Gymnasium (the host site) when an attempted tip-slam just missed the mark. Newington made it back to the state tournament his senior season, but lost in the second round to Wilton, 64-57. The shooting guard is the all-time leading scorer in school history with 1,816 points, including a record 550 in one year. He's also the all-time assists leader at 488. Simmons was All-Central Connecticut Conference (CCC) for four years, and made all-state three times. Simmons made stops at the University of West Georgia and Weatherford College before landing at USJ.
