Kociszewski Nets Overtime Winner, Guides Field Hockey Past Sage, 4-3
ALBANY, N.Y. – Freshman Grace Kociszewski (Thomaston, Conn.) scored one minute and 36 seconds in overtime to power the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) field hockey team to victory over Russell Sage College (Sage), 4-3, in overtime during non-conference play Tuesday night at the University at Albany Alumni Turf Field in Albany, N.Y. Win the win, the Blue Jays improve to 3-2 on the year, while the Gators drop to 0-3 on the season.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- Sage would grab the early lead, scoring 4:53 into the first quarter to hold a 1-0 edge.
- The Blue Jays would rattle shots off, but were denied by the Gators goaltender, preserving the 1-0 lead for Sage entering the second quarter.
- USJ continued to pepper the net in the second, but were unable to find the equalizing goal, as the score remained 1-0 heading into halftime.
- Kociszewski wasted little time finding the leveler in the second half, scoring 13 seconds into the third quarter to tie the game at 1-1.
- Junior forward Aurelia Barker (Thomaston, Conn.) quickly swung the lead in USJ's favor, finding the back of the net at the 36:58 mark, establishing a 2-1 USJ edge.
- Kociszewski continued the Blue Jays momentum, increasing the gap to 3-1 with a solo goal at the 48:24 mark in the fourth quarter.
- However, Sage would fight back, scoring back-to-back goals inside of a minute to tie the game at 3-3 with 10 minutes left to play.
- Neither team could find a winner in regulation, as the game entered overtime.
- Kociszewski again came up clutch for the Blue Jays, rounding out her hattrick with the game winning goal, 1:36 into overtime, lifting the Blue Jays to a 4-3 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Kociszewski netted her eight career goal, and tallied her first career hat-trick.
- Barker scored her first goal of the season.
- USJ held a significant edge in shots, 24-6, and shot on goal, 15-3.
- The Blue Jays generated six penalty corner opportunities compared to three for Sage.
- Delgado got the start in the cage for USJ, playing all 60 minutes, but did not record a save while picking up the win (2-1).

The Blue Jays return home for its Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener on Saturday, September 14 against Anna Maria College. Start time against the AMCATS on the USJ Field Hockey Field in West Hartford, Conn., is set for noon.
