Field Hockey Dealt 5-0 Loss In Season Finale Wednesday

STANDISH, Maine  The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) field hockey team suffered a 5-0 setback in its regular-season finale to the Monks of Saint Joseph's College of Maine (SJC), in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match at the SJC Athletics Complex Wednesday evening. The loss concludes the inaugural season for the field hockey program, who finish the first-ever season 4-11 overall and 3-8 in GNAC play. The Blue Jays ended in a three-way tie for eighth in the conference standings with Regis and Anna Maria, but just missed out on a playoff berth losing the tiebreaker to Anna Maria by goal differential for the final playoff spot.

The Blue Jays did not make things easy for the Monks in this one, as both teams played to a first-half draw, despite the hosts, who were 8-2 against GNAC opponents entering the match, holding a large shots advantage. SJC finally got the better of USJ in the second half, scoring five goals on the way to the victory. It was a great effort by the defense to hold the Monks at bay for nearly 40 minutes of action and from sophomore goalie and captain Wendy Bowden (Old Saybrook, Conn.) in goal Wednesday afternoon  who finished with 11 saves in 60 minutes of work, but the Monks were able to find the back of the cage for five goals over the final 20 minutes of play.

COACH QUOTE [Karen Nell] "The team fought hard from the first whistle to the last. We held a top-three team in the league to a scoreless first half…that is something to be proud of. The first season for our team was a great one. The culture we created was a family one both on and off the field. That has given us a strong foundation for our future. We will take the next nine months to prepare for the 2022 season, and come out stronger and wiser."

The highlight of the Blue Jays' inaugural season came in an 11-1 rain-soaked win over the Falcons of Albertus Magnus College to record the program's first conference win. 11 of the team's 25 goals on the season came in that game, a game where six different Blue Jays scored. USJ will look to build on the foundation set in year one as the fall sports season begins to come to a close.
