Baseball Drops Non‑Conference Contest at Wheaton on Thursday
HOW IT HAPPENED

Wheaton struck early, plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning to grab a 4–0 lead.
- The Blue Jays answered in the third inning, erupting for four runs to tie the game at 4–4. The rally featured RBI singles from senior outfielder Dom Scalia (Northford, Conn.) and junior outfielder Joseph Fritz (Tampa, Fla.)—the 100th hit of his career—along with an RBI double from senior infielder JJ Fox (Killingworth, Conn.) and an RBI groundout by freshman infielder Sam Balducci (South Windsor, Conn.).

USJ took its first lead of the game in the fifth inning. Junior infielder Tyler Carlstrom (Rocky Hill, Conn.) delivered a two‑run single into left‑center field, scoring senior infielder Ryan Shaw (Ellington, Conn.). Senior catcher Chase Belisle (Wolcott, Conn.) followed with an infield single to plate Fritz, and a defensive miscue allowed Carlstrom to score, giving the Blue Jays a 7–4 advantage.

Wheaton chipped away in the sixth as Ty Bellan lined a two‑run single to right field to cut the deficit to 7–6.

The Blue Jays pushed their lead back to two in the seventh when Fox lined an RBI single to right‑center, scoring Belisle to make it 8–6.

However, the Lyons rallied in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs to tie the game at 8–8.

Wheaton took the lead in the eighth inning when Derek Babineau Jr. scored on a wild pitch. USJ was unable to answer, as the Lyons held on for the 9–8 victory.

UP NEXT
The Blue Jays return to West Hartford on Saturday, April 25, for a pivotal Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader against intrastate rival Mitchell College. The twin bill will also serve as Senior Day for USJ. First pitch at the USJ Baseball Field is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
