Baseball Drops Both Ends of GNAC Doubleheader at Elms on Saturday

HOLYOKE, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) baseball team dropped a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader to Elms College on Saturday afternoon at Mackenzie Stadium. The Blazers claimed a tightly contested opener, 1–0, before securing a 4–0 victory in the finale. With the results, USJ moved to 21–13 overall and 10–6 in GNAC play, while Elms improved to 11–17 overall and 5–9 in conference action.

GAME ONE | ELMS 1, USJ 0

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Offense was at a premium in the opening game, as neither team could break through early.
  • The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Elms pushed across the lone run of the contest as Aidan Daugherty scored on a wild pitch to give the Blazers a 1–0 lead.
  • The Blue Jays threatened in the top of the seventh inning when senior infielder Ryan Shaw (Ellington, Conn.) reached on an error to lead off the frame and advanced into scoring position. However, USJ was unable to capitalize, and Elms held on to secure the shutout victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Senior pitcher Brandon Cahill (Meriden, Conn.) turned in another strong outing, tossing a complete game while allowing just three hits and one unearned run, striking out seven.
  • JJ Fox (Killingworth, Conn.), Tyler Carlstrom (Rocky Hill, Conn.), and Jack Kane (West Hartford, Conn.) each recorded a hit for USJ.

GAME TWO | ELMS 4, USJ 0

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The second game also featured a pitcher's duel early, with both teams held scoreless through the first two innings.
  • Elms broke through in the third inning when a wild pitch allowed Anthony Osella to score, giving the Blazers a 1–0 lead.
  • The Blazers added to their advantage in the sixth as Eliam Martinez launched a two‑run home run to extend the lead to 3–0.
  • Elms tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning to make it 4–0 and complete the sweep.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Shaw and senior outfielder Dom Scalia (Northford, Conn.) each reached base twice with a hit and a walk.
  • Junior pitcher Ethan Slowik (Greenville, N.Y.) made the start in game two, tossing 5.2 innings while allowing five hits and three runs, striking out six.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays return to action on Monday, April 20, hosting Albertus Magnus College for a GNAC doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 12:00 p.m., with game two scheduled to follow at approximately 2:30 p.m.
