Shaw Reaches 100 Career Hits, Baseball Drops RussMatt Finale to Babson on Saturday
DAVENPORT, Fla. – Senior infielder Ryan Shaw (Ellington, Conn.) recorded the 100th hit of his collegiate career with a single to right field in the top of the fourth inning, but the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) baseball team fell to Babson College, 9–8, on Saturday morning to conclude play at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Northeast Regional Park.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
USJ wasted no time setting the tone in the top of the first inning. Senior outfielder Dom Scalia (Northford, Conn.) ripped an RBI single up the middle to give the Blue Jays a 1–0 lead, and junior outfielder Joseph Fritz (Tampa, Fla.) followed by reaching on a fielder's choice to quickly double the advantage to 2–0.
-
Babson answered immediately in the bottom half of the frame, as Ryan Grace launched a two‑run home run to even the score at 2–2.
-
The Blue Jays reclaimed the lead in the second inning when sophomore infielder Jack Kane (West Hartford, Conn.) laced an RBI double into the right‑center gap, scoring sophomore outfielder Joe Gratta (Bristol, Conn.) to make it 3–2.
-
Babson countered with a big inning in the bottom of the third, plating five runs to surge ahead, 7–3.
-
USJ responded with resilience in the top of the fourth, erupting for four runs to tie the game at 7–7. Shaw opened the inning with his milestone hit and later came around to score on Gratta's RBI double. Senior infielder JJ Fox (Killingworth, Conn.) added an RBI groundout, while Scalia and senior outfielder Ryan Quinn (Middletown, Conn.) each delivered RBI singles to complete the rally.
-
Kane continued his standout week at the plate in the fifth, ripping an RBI single to left to put USJ back in front, 8–7.
-
Babson had the final answer, however, as a two‑run double from Ian LaForest in the bottom of the seventh proved decisive, lifting the Beavers to a 9–8 victory.
