Baseball Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader with UMass Dartmouth on Friday Afternoon

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) baseball team split a non‑conference doubleheader with UMass Dartmouth (UMD) on Friday afternoon during day five of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Northeast Regional Park. The Blue Jays edged the Corsairs, 3–2, in an extra‑inning opener before falling by the same score in game two. With the split, USJ moved to 7–2 on the season, while UMD improved to 3–7.

GAME ONE (EIGHT INNINGS) | USJ 3, UMD 2

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After seven scoreless innings, USJ broke through in the top of the eighth. Sophomore infielder Jack Kane (West Hartford, Conn.) lined an RBI single to left, driving in senior outfielder Ryan Quinn (Middletown, Conn.) to give the Blue Jays a 1–0 lead.
  • Later in the inning, freshman infielder Sam Balducci (South Windsor, Conn.) ripped a two‑run double down the right‑field line, scoring Kane and senior infielder JJ Fox (Killingworth, Conn.) to extend the advantage to 3–0.
  • UMD pushed across two runs in the bottom of the eighth but could not complete the comeback, as senior pitcher Brandon Cahill (Meriden, Conn.) closed the door to secure the win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Cahill was dominant, tossing all eight innings while allowing five hits and two unearned runs, and striking out 12.
  • Kane and Balducci paced the offense with two hits apiece.

GAME TWO | USJ 2, UMD 3

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when Quinn beat out an infield single that brought home sophomore outfielder Joe Gratta (Bristol, Conn.).
  • UMD responded in the top of the fourth, evening the game at 1–1 on an RBI single from Spencer Aubin.
  • USJ reclaimed the lead in the fifth as senior outfielder Dom Scalia (Northford, Conn.) singled up the middle to score Kane, making it 2–1.
  • The Corsairs answered with two runs in the sixth inning and held the Blue Jays scoreless the rest of the way to earn the split.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Junior pitcher Ethan Slowik (Greenville, N.Y.) turned in a strong outing, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out eight across 5.1 innings. His first strikeout of the game marked a career milestone, as it was the 100th strikeout of his collegiate career.
  • Kane continued his productive day at the plate, finishing with two hits and a run scored.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays close out play at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Saturday, March 14, taking on Babson College. First pitch between USJ and the Beavers is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Fla.
