Baseball Suffers First Loss of 2026 Season to Sage Monday Afternoon

DAVENPORT, Fla. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) baseball team suffered its first loss of the 2026 season, falling to Russell Sage College (Sage), 10-7, in its second game of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Monday afternoon. With the result, the Blue Jays dropped to 4-1 overall on the season, while Sage improved to 3-1 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Sage struck first in the opening inning with a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead.
  • USJ answered immediately in the bottom half, plating three runs to jump in front. Senior outfielder Dom Scalia (Northford, Conn.) drew a bases-loaded walk to even the score at 1-1. Freshman infielder Sam Balducci (South Windsor, Conn.) followed with an RBI groundout to give the Blue Jays the lead, and sophomore catcher Jack Kushman (Southington, Conn.) added a sacrifice fly to right to extend the advantage to 3-1. 
  • In the second inning, Scalia launched his second home run of the season, a three-run shot that pushed the USJ lead to 6-1.
  • The Blue Jays added another run in the third when senior infielder JJ Fox (Killingworth, Conn.) reached on a fielder's choice, allowing junior infielder Tyler Carlstrom (Rocky Hill, Conn.) to score and make it 7-1.
  • Sage flipped the momentum in the fourth inning, stringing together nine unanswered runs to complete the comeback and earn a 10–7 win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Junior outfielder Joseph Fritz (Tampa, Fla.), sophomore infielder Jack Kane (West Hartford, Conn.), and senior outfielder Ryan Quinn (Middletown, Conn.) each recorded multi-hit performances.
  • Scalia paced the Blue Jays' offense with a team-high four RBIs.
  • Freshman pitcher Carsten Donovan (Cheshire, Conn.) made his collegiate debut in relief, tossing three innings while allowing two hits and one run, while striking out two.  

UP NEXT

Baseball returns to action tomorrow, taking on Bowdoin College in its third game of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. First pitch between the Blue Jays and Polar Bears is set for 5:45 p.m. at Chain of Lakes Field 2 in Winter Haven, Fla.
