Volleyball Wins Eighth

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Elizabeth Tuazon (Mystic, Conn.) had 14 digs and Megan Williams (Lakeville, Conn.) had 26 assists and 10 digs as the University of Saint Joseph volleyball team defeated Mount Ida in four sets Saturday in a GNAC match at USJ.

St. Joseph improved to 8-12 overall and 2-4 in the GNAC. Mount Ida is 3-19 and 0-6. USJs eighth win of the season matched their season total from 2012 and the Blue Jays still have nine regular-season matches remaining.

Scores by set were 25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 25-23.

Both teams made more hitting errors than kills and defense shined with Mount Ida amassing 64 digs and St. Joseph 48. Kelcey Koolman (Bedford, N.H.) had 16 digs for Mount Ida and Hillary Kostner (Corona, Cal.) had 14 digs and a match-high 11 kills. Ciara Perez (Manchester, Conn.) had 10 kills for St. Joseph and Emily Vigue (Lebanon, Conn.) had nine to go along with four service aces.

USJ had a chance to close out the match in three sets and led 22-21. Mount Ida pulled even at 23 and a USJ error and kill from Kostner gave the Mustangs the third set. Facing elimination in the fourth set, Mount Ida fought off two match points before Vigue ended things with a kill from Williams.
