Tennis Defeats Western, 7-2

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Lisa Wawrzynowski (Newington, Conn.), Rebecca Mauri (Meriden, Conn.) and Amanda Willhoft (Manchester, Conn.) each earned singles and doubles victories as the University of Saint Joseph tennis team defeated Western Conn. 7-2 Tuesday in a non-conference match at USJ.

St. Joseph is 2-3 on the season and has already matched its win total from last season. Western was playing its season opener.

The day began with three tense, close doubles matches that saw the Blue Jays earn a sweep. Wawrzynowski and Meghan Toth (Naugatuck, Conn.) at No.1, Mauri and Rebecca Chenard (Meriden, Conn.) at No. 2 and Willhoft and Emma Allen (Granby, Conn.) at No. 3 each earned 8-6 wins and gave USJ a solid lead heading into singles play.

Mauri, Wawrzynowski and Amanda Willhoft picked up wins at the Nos. 2-4 singles spots and Serena Sundara (Windsor, Conn.) picked up a win for the Blue Jays at No. 5.

St. Joseph returns action Wed. Sept. 25  with a 3:30 p.m. match at MCLA.
