Soccer Streak Ends

SOMMERVILLE, Mass. – Suffolk's Gabrielle Balestrier (Mohnton, Pa.) scored 21 minutes into the game and Meghan McHale (Halifax, Mass.) added an insurance goal with three minutes left as the Rams defeated Saint Joseph 2-0 Saturday in a GNAC game at Dilboy Stadium.

Saint Joseph, ranked 10th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) New England, Division III poll lost its first league game of the season and had its school-record 13-game unbeaten streak snapped. Saint Joseph's last loss had come in the first game of the season, Aug. 31 against Manhattanville, 1-0.

Saint Joseph is 12-2-1 overall and finished GNAC play 10-1-1. The Blue Jays clinched the first regular-season championship in school history Wednesday and will be the No. 1 seed in the GNAC tournament that begins Sun. Oct. 28 when they host the No. 8 seed.

Suffolk improved to 5-10 overall and 5-6 in the GNAC.

Saint Joseph outshot Suffolk, 9-5 but Suffolk goalkeeper Melissa Brouillette (Shelton, Conn.) made five saves including one on a point-blank shot by USJ's Patricia Nolan (Portland, Conn.) in the 52nd minute, which would have tied the score.

Saint Joseph is back in action Tue. Oct. 23, hosting Coast Guard in non-conference game to close out the regular season at 3:30 p.m. That game will be taped by CPTV Sports and have its first airing Thur. Oct. 25 at 7:30 p.m.
