LONGMEADOW, Mass. – Sara Barnick (Watertown, Conn.) scored 22 seconds into the game to open the floodgates and the University of Saint Joseph soccer team went on to defeat Bay Path 8-0 Monday in a non-league game at Bay Path.
Barnick would score again at the 10:02 mark for a 2-0 Blue Jay lead and both were assisted by Katie Mirabella (Seymour, Conn.), who had two second-half goals of her own. Mirabella finished with two goals and two assists and Barnick also added an assist.
Patricia Nolan (Portland, Conn.) and Tiana Saraceno (Plainville, Conn.) each finished with a goal and an assist for Saint Joseph. Nolan's goal was the 33rd of her career and tied her for second in school history with Eva Peart, who scored 33 from 2007-10. Only Paige Briglia (34 goals from 2007-09) has scored more.
USJ freshman Jaclyn Steeves (Everett, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal 30 minutes into game, which gave the Blue Jays a 5-0 lead they took into halftime. Freshman Michelle Turkington (Cromwell, Conn.) notched the final tally, with 13:07 to play, which was also her first career goal.
In goal for the Blue Jays, Melissa Dodge (Watertown, Conn.) made two saves over the first 75 minutes and Tara Kowalski (Colchester, Conn.) made one in a combined shutout.
Saint Joseph outshot Bay Path, 36-3. The Blue Jays have won three games in a row and are 3-1 overall. Bay Path is 0-3-1.
Saint Joseph plays at Norwich, Wed. Sept. 12 at 3:30 p.m. and plays its home opener, Sat. Sept. 15 against Johnson & Wales at 1 p.m.
