MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Freshman Sara Barnick (Watertown, Conn.) scored her first career goal and sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Hebert (Wolcott, Conn.) saved a potential game-tying penalty kick as the University of Saint Joseph soccer team defeated host Eastern Conn. 1-0 Saturday night at the 2nd Annual Warrior Classic.
Barnick scored with 10:22 left in the game. Barnick and Patricia Nolan (Portland, Conn.) got into a 2-on-1 with Eastern keeper Rachel Skelton and Barnick one-touched home a pass from Nolan, putting the ball in the lower right corner of the goal. Hebert made a diving stop of an Eastern penalty kick in the second half to preserve her first collegiate shutout.
Saint Joseph (1-1) avenged a 6-1 loss at the hands of Eastern (1-1) in the second round of last year's tournament and handed the Warriors their first tournament loss after three victories in two years.
Eastern outshot USJ, 9-5 overall, but both teams put four shots on goal.
Saint Joseph plays at Mitchell, Wed. Sept. 5 at 4 p.m.
