Cross Country Competes at UMass Dartmouth Invitational

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's and women's cross country teams competed at the 46th Annual UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday on the Robert Dowd Course in Dartmouth, Mass. Three men raced in the 16th running of the Buddy Harris Men's 8K Championship Race, while senior Mia Tompkins (Meriden, Conn.) competed in a 5K on the women's side and posted the best finish on the day for the Blue Jays after crossing the finish line 40th out of 318 runners. The Blue Jays will be back in action next on Saturday, September 22nd at the Blazer Classic Invitational hosted by Elms College.

THE RUNDOWN - WOMEN

Senior Emily Bryson's winning time of 17:54.59 propelled Brandeis to the team title at the 46th Annual UMass Dartmouth Women's Cross Country Invitational that took place on the Robert Dowd Course Saturday afternoon, as the Judges topped runner-up Trinity and third place Merrimack in the event.

Bryson bested WPI junior Sydney Packard (18:14.66) by nearly 20 seconds over the 5K layout for the top individual honor, as Brandeis also received a fourth-place finish from freshman Jac Guerra (18:21.36) in route to recording 55 points for the win. Merrimack junior Katherine Ferrara posted a third-place time of 18:19.44, while American International senior Ivy Chepyegon was fifth in a time of 18:24.28.

Trinity junior Samantha Feenstra recorded a sixth place time of 18:28.44, while the Suffolk junior tandem of Emily Manfra and Emma Weisse followed at 18:28.75 and 18:29.78, respectively. Keene State junior Lauren Perkowski and Merrimack sophomore Kate Fisher rounded out the top 10 with respective times of 18:46.49 and 18:48.54.

Trinity (105) bested Merrimack (107) by two points for second place in the final team standings, while WPI (127) and Wellesley (225) rounded out the top five.

FOR THE BLUE JAYS

  • Senior Mia Tompkins (Meriden, Conn.) led the Blue Jays finishing the 5K with a time of 19:35.69 to post a 40th place overall finish.

THE RUNDOWN - MEN

Southern New Hampshire claimed three of the top seven individual spots to take top team honors at the 46th Annual UMass Dartmouth Men's Cross Country Invitational on the Robert Dowd Course Saturday morning, as the Penmen (74) topped WPI (87) by 13 points in the 16th running of the Buddy Harris Men's 8K Championship Race. 

Plymouth State senior Sam Brunette took top individual honors in the event, as he covered the 8K layout in a time of 24:32.02 to outdistance Bridgewater State junior Trevor Wysong by seven seconds. Trinity junior Weyessa McAlister was third with a time of 24:56.09, while the Southern New Hampshire sophomore duo of Cedric Jocelyn and Micah Hewitson were next with respective fourth and fifth place times of 25:08.23 and 25:11.20. 

American International senior Patric Clark was sixth with a time of 25:12.38, while Southern New Hampshire junior Michael Moreno and WPI senior Michael Brady followed with times of 25:16.26 and 25:18.40. UMass Dartmouth sophomore Bruno Pires (New Bedford, Mass.) and Springfield senior Jack Pinho rounded out the top 10 with respective times of 25:16.65 and 25:18.40.

American International snagged third place in the final team standings with 108 points, while Franklin Pierce (183) and Trinity (194) rounded out the top five.

FOR THE BLUE JAYS

  • Freshman Eric Knox (Bristol, Conn.) set the new 8K school standard with a time of 32.25.76 to place 240th out of 295 runners.
  • Freshman Mario Manon-Porcella (Torrington, Conn.) was the second USJ runner to cross the finish line and was 271st with a 35:53.78 effort.
  • Freshman Chamroeun Chhorn (Danbury, Conn.) rounded out the Saint Joseph runners with a time of 39:17.41 and placed 279th overall.

UP NEXT
The USJ men's and women's cross country teams will be back in action next on Saturday, September 22nd at the Blazer Classic Invitational hosted by Elms College. The women's race is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. while the men will begin at approximately 12:00 p.m.
