Cross Country Runs Into Season

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The University of Saint Joseph Cross Country team opened its 2012 season, competing in the Smith College Invitational Saturday. 

Junior Kristin Burke (Randolph, Mass.) was the top Saint Joseph runner, finishing ahead of 30 out of 153 competitors. She ran the 5-kilometer course in 27 minutes, 50.34 seconds. 

Anne Pitoniak (West Haven, Conn.), Ashley Figueroa (New Britain, Conn.), Serena Cochran (Ledyard, Conn.) and Lisa Luciano (Torrington, Conn.) earned the other scoring places for Saint Joseph. Pitoniak, Figeroa and Luciano were all competing in their first collegiate race. 

The Blue Jays finished 14th in the team competition, which was won by Wellesley. Smith College junior Kylee Drugan-Eppich was the individual winner in 19:59.41. 

Saint Joseph returns to action, Sat. Sept. 15 at Manhattanville.
