Tennis Turns It On In Singles, Defeats Suffolk, 6-3

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team picked up another impressive Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win, defeating Suffolk University, 6-3, Saturday afternoon at the Hall High School Tennis Courts. With the victory, the Blue Jays improve to 4-3 (2-1 GNAC), while the Rams drop to 1-8 (1-3 GNAC). USJ took two out of three in doubles, before stepping on the gas and snagging four of six singles matches to account for the final margin.

In number one doubles, sophomore Jessica McAllister (Bristol, Conn.) and freshman Elaina Griffiths (Guilford, Conn.) kept it close from start to finish, relying on heads-up teamwork to stay one game behind, first 3-2, then 4-3, 5-4, and 6-5. McAllister used a strong forehand to score several points, while Griffiths utilized some precise positioning late in volleys to score critical points. In the end, sophomores Ilda Ascic (Sarajevo, Bosnia) and Kendall Smith (Germany) were too much though, capitalizing late to take the final two games and win, 8-5.

The Blue Jays controlled number two and three doubles, as the dynamic duo of sophomore Carolyn Callahan (Southington, Conn.) and freshman Marie Emerson (Killingworth, Conn.) took home another doubles win, their fifth of the year, 8-4. Senior captain Domonique Carnot (Meriden, Conn.) and freshman Emily Kerr (Portland, Conn.) also played strong from game one, taking the match, 8-2. USJ led 2-1 heading into singles competition.

USJ took four of the six singles matches to seal the victory. Carnot took her match at second singles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, to close the match and improve the Blue Jays to 2-1 in GNAC action. Kerr did not drop a single game at fourth singles, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Griffiths and Callahan also took singles victories for the Blue Jays. Ascic led the way for the Rams with a singles victory in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, and her earlier doubles victory.
