PAXTON, Mass. - The University of Saint Joseph tennis team dropped just three total games as they cruised to a 9-0 victory over the Anna Maria Amcats on the road on Saturday afternoon. It marks the Blue Jays first shutout of the season and improves their record to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play. Anna Maria slips to 0-7 and 0-3 in the GNAC with the loss.
The Blue Jays started off strong and would never look back after they swept all three of their eight-game pro-set doubles matches, 8-0. Senior Rebecca Mauri (Meriden, CT/Platt) paired with sophomore Lucy Roberge (Willington, CT/E.O. Smith) at No. 1 doubles, sophomore Sakinah Abdulsalam (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) teamed up with classmate Ashley Savino (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook) at No. 2 doubles and sophomore Leah Nguyen (West Hartford, CT/Conard) and rookie Domonique Carnot (Meriden, CT/Maloney) were at No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, USJ kept the pedal to the floor and clinched the victory after Savino (No. 4) and Carnot (No. 6) both earned 6-0, 6-0 straight set wins in their respective matches. Junior Tara Smith (Palmer, MA/Palmer) blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and Mauri followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles.
Roberge and Abdulsalam capped off the shutout. Roberge recorded a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 2 singles and Abdulsalam defeated her opponent in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.
The USJ tennis team will look to keep things rolling when they return to action next at home on Monday against Bay Path. The match is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. on the USJ Tennis Courts.
