WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Freshman Alise Martel (Harwinton, Conn.), who has been a staple for the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's swimming and diving team all year, has been selected as the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Swimmer of the Week, it was announced on Wednesday afternoon. It marks the first NEISDA Swimmer of the Week nod for Martel in her career.
Martel is coming off a stellar week in the pool, winning four individual events in the last two meets. On January 22 versus Eastern Connecticut State University at home, the sophomore sensation won the 100-Yard Freestyle and the 500 Freestyle. She even tacked on a second place swim in the 50 Freestyle. Three days later, she was back to her winning ways, this time claiming the 50 Freestyle and the 100 Freestyle, in a 148-114 victory at Western New England University (WNEU) to conclude the regular season on January 25. Martel also brought it home in second place in her first time competing in the 1000 Freestyle at WNEU.
Martel is a native of Harwinton, Connecticut, and swam for Lewis S. Mills High School in Burlington, Connecticut.
USJ will compete in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships, which will be held Friday, February 1 through Sunday, February 3 at Simmons University.
