KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Saint Joseph swimming & diving team posted a 15th place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay to open the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving (NEISDA) Championships at the Tootell Aquatics Center on the campus of the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I. on Thursday night.
In the lone and opening event of the four-day NEISDA Championships, USJ's 800-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Leah Verrillo (Cheshire, Conn.), senior Olivia Kajda (Katowice, Poland), and junior's Richelle DiFronzo (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Elizabeth Sears (Bristol, Conn.), combined to post a time of 11:13.39 to grab a 15th place overall finish. Sears, the anchor of the relay team, logged the fastest split on the evening wrapping up the race in 2:34.08. Verrillo started things off with a split of 2:42.07 followed by Kajda (2:48.16) and DiFronzo (3:09.08).
The result earned the Blue Jays 24 points towards their team score and they sit in 15th place after the opening night of action.
The Blue Jays return to the pool on Friday morning for day two of the NEISDA Championships at 10 a.m. to compete in the preliminaries before contesting in the finals at 6 p.m.
