Swimming & Diving Hosts Blue Jay Pentathlon

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph swimming and diving team hosted its first home swim meet of the 2016-17 season on Friday night with the Blue Jay Pentathlon Invitational. The Blue Jays welcomed Eastern Connecticut, Western New England and Rhode Island College inside Bruyette Natatorium for the meet.

Sophomores Veronika Latawiec (Newington, CT) and Gabriella Alberino (East Haven, CT) led USJ in its home opener. Latawiec posted four top-10 finishes on the day including a pair of runner-up results. Alberino also logged four top-10 marks for the Blue Jays with a fourth place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke as her best result.

Latawiec started off the meet strong with a silver medal in the 100 back, touching the wall with a time of 1:08.12. Alberino finished just behind her in fifth place with a time of 1:12.06.

Alberino swam to a time of 1:18.65 in the 100 breaststroke for her fourth place finish, while Latawiec finished sixth with a time of 1:19.84.

In the 100 butterfly Alberino was the lone Blue Jay to post a top-10 finish and turned in a ninth place result with a final time of 1:16.36.

Latawiec and Alberino then teamed up with senior Raelynne Andrews (Bristol, CT) and senior Lillian McKenzie (Rocky Hill, CT) on the 200 medley relay team for a fourth place finish. The team combined for a time of 2:15.19 to earn the result.

The 100 free saw Latawiec touch the wall fifth overall for the Blue Jays. The sophomore stopped the clock with a time of 1:02.64.

Latawiec then recorded her second runner-up finish of the meet in the 100 IM touching the wall at the 1:09.55 mark. Alberino also finished inside the top-10 in the event with a time of 1:11.91, good for sixth place overall.

The final event of the meet, the 400 free relay, saw Alberino and Latawiec paired with freshman Alyssa Barandon (Meriden, CT) and freshman Leah Verrillo (Cheshire, CT). The team posted a third place finish with a combined time of 4:49.22.

The USJ swimming and diving team will return to action next on Saturday, Nov. 5 when they travel to UMass Dartmouth for the Louise Goodrum Invitational. The meet is scheduled to begin at 12 noon.
