Swimming Pushes Western in Tight Meet

DANBURY, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph swimming & diving team dropped a close 146-135 dual meet against Western Conn. Friday night at the O'Neill Center Pool.

Veronika Latawiec (Newington, Conn.) and Rachel Mauthe (East Lyme, Conn.) each earned two individual wins with a second-place finish apiece in individual events. Latawiec won the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke. Mauthe won the 1000 freestyle and 500 free with Tina Nguyen (East Hartford, Conn.) finishing second in the 500 for a 1-2 Blue Jay finish.

Gabriella Alberino (East Haven, Conn.) earned key points for USJ with three second-place finishes and Nguyen had two thirds to go along with one second.

Western led 135-129 heading into the final relay and needing a win, was aided by a USJ disqualification for a false start.

USJ next competes at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference meet Dec. 5-6 at Simmons College.
