Swimming & Diving Opens With Win

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph swimming and diving team opened its 2015-16 season Saturday with a 126-116 dual meet win over Rhode Island College Saturday at the Bruyette Natatorium.

Newcomers Veronika Latawiec (Newington, Conn.) and Gabriella Alberino (East Haven, Conn.) had very successful beginnings to their collegiate careers, each earning two wins and picking up a second place finish. Latawiec won the 50 backstroke (31.39 seconds) and the 100 back (1:08.97) and was second in the 50 butterfly. Alberino won the 50 freestyle (29.20), the 100 free (1:03.88) and was second in the 100 individual medley.

Junior Luz Holmes won the 1-meter diving with a 137.45 total. Sophomore Agata Sarna (Bristol, Conn.) earned key points with second-place finishes and a third.

USJ hosts the Blue Jay Pentathlon Friday, Oct. 30 at 5 p.m.
