Skoly Leads Women's Soccer to Victory in Season Opener

Purchase, N.Y. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's soccer team defeated the Manhattanville College Valiants by a score of 1-0 in its season opener on Friday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field. Senior Morgan Skoly (Vernon, Conn.) lifted the Blue Jays to victory with a goal in the 48th minute to move USJ to 1-0-0 on the season. The Blue Jays return to action next on Sunday, September 2 when they travel to Dean College. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.

The Blue Jays opened the first half of play on the defensive side of the field before settling in and heading down the Valiants side of the field to get a couple shots off in the early going. However, neither team was able to break through in the first half. After all was said and done, the shots remained even as USJ and the Valiants (0-1-0) both had six (three on goal) over the opening 45 minutes of action. USJ's senior goalkeeper, Megan Ricci (Center Moriches, N.Y.), made three of her four saves in the game in the first half.

The second half would begin with a quick strike by Skoly to net the first goal of the season - 18th of her career - for the Blue Jays off a feed by graduate senior Jessica Spezzano (Watertown, Conn.) in the 48th minute. The Blue Jays kept the pressure on and ended the half with ten shots for a total of 16 in the match. The Valiants mustered five shots in the second half, but put only one on target which was handled by Ricci. Manhattanville finished with a total of 11 shots in the match.
