WINTHROP, Mass. - Freshman Cheyenne-Mone Smith (Wethersfield, Conn.) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's basketball team earned her third Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week award of the season, it was announced by the conference front office on Monday afternoon. It marks the third time Smith has earned the GNAC nod over the past five weeks and the fourth time in the last six weeks a player from USJ has picked up the honor.
Smith had a big week for the Blue Jays averaging 19.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 4.0 steals over a pair of GNAC games. Smith opened the week erupting for a career-high and game-high 28 points on Tuesday night against intrastate and league rival Albertus Magnus where she was 12-of-18 shooting from the floor and 4-of-6 from the line. She also pulled down a career-high and game-high 12 rebounds against the Falcons, good for her second career double-double, and added four assists and six steals on the night.
The 5-9 freshman guard followed that up with 11 points, five rebounds, an assist, and two steals on Saturday at home versus Emmanuel. On the week, the rookie out of Wethersfield shot 17-of-34 from the field and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe.
Smith and the Blue Jays will play their second to last game of the season at home versus the Lasell College Lasers on Wednesday, February 13. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
