Basketball Season Comes to a Close

NEWTON, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph basketball team concluded its season Saturday with a 77-58 loss at Lasell College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference game.

Lasell improved to 12-13 on the year and 5-6 in the GNAC. USJ finished 3-22 overall and 2-9 in league play. Lasell finished seventh in the GNAC standings in the regular-season and qualified for next week's conference tournament.

USJ sophomore forward Kayla Guest (Newington, Conn.) posted a double-double with 30 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Guest became only the third player in school history with multiple 30-point games in her career joining Ilaria Schiano who scored 36 and 35 in 2009 and all-time leading scorer and USJ Hall of Famer Stacy Manfredi who topped 30 six times in her senior year of 1997-98. Guest scored 31 last Saturday in a 70-56 win over Mount Ida.

USJ junior guard Carlee Putnam (Niantic, Conn.) had 12 points and seven rebounds, while Elisha Pertillar (Windsor, Conn.) and Rajeen Mayo (Middletown, Conn.) had even rebounds apiece for the Blue Jays.

Lasell jumped out to an early lead behind four three-pointers to take a 20-8 lead through the opening 10 minutes. The Lasers pushed their lead to 32-10 with 6:46 to play in the half before a Guest three-point play started a 17-7 run to trim the Lasell lead to 39-27 at intermission. Lasell built the lead back to 62-40 after three and USJ was unable to get closer than 17 in the fourth quarter.

Lasell senior guard Katie Stopera (Hollis, N.H.) paced the hosts with 30 points and became the program's all-time leading scorer on a driving layup with 50 seconds remaining in the contest. Stopera pushed her career scoring tally to 1,247 in three seasons at Lasell, surpassing Courtney Casserly's mark of 1,244 set in 2007. She also handed out a game-high five assists to go with five steals. Senior guard Deanna Barrett (Berlin, Conn.) added 24 points.
