PURCHASE, N.Y. – Manhattanville senior guard Ashley Raaf (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) scored a game-high 32 points to lead the Valiants to an 83-50 victory over the University of Saint Joseph Thursday in a non-conference basketball game at Kennedy Gym.
Manhattanville improved to 17-7 overall on the season; USJ is 3-21.
Carlee Putnam (Niantic, Conn.) and Kayla Guest (Newington, Conn.) scored 14 points apiece to lead USJ. Rajeen Mayo scored 12 points and made three steals for the Blue Jays. Elisha Pertillar (Windsor, Conn.) and Dimitra Hatika (South Windsor, Conn.) each had a team-high eight rebounds.
USJ played Manhattanville to a virtual standstill over the first nine minutes and trailed 15-14 after a Putnam three-pointer with 3:11 to play in the opening period. But the Valiants led 26-15 at the end of the quarter and 48-19 after going on a 33-5, 13-minute run to close the half. It was 69-41 at the end of the three quarters.
Manhattanville shot better from the floor at 33-for-77 (42.9 percent) to 16-for-56 (28.6 percent) for USJ, though St. Joseph shot well from the free throw line, making 17 of 22 attempts (77.3 percent). The Valiants outrebounded the Blue Jays, 58-35.
USJ concludes its season Saturday Feb. 20 at Lasell in a 1 p.m. GNAC game.
