WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Westfield State women's basketball team scored a school -record 119 points as the Owls raced past the University of St. Joseph 119-69 in the opening game of the second annual Westfield State Holiday Tournament at the Woodward Center Saturday afternoon.
Westfield (6-4) pushed the pace all afternoon, leading 31-12 at the end of the first quarter and 60-37 at the half. The Owls cracked the 100-point mark on a layup by Kirsy Segarra (Holyoke/Holyoke, Mass.) with 7:21 left in the game. Westfield has scored 100 or more points on three occasions this season and ranked third in the country in points per game (88.7) entering the contest.
Kayla Guest (Newington, Conn.) led USJ (0-9) with 15 points. Rajeen Mayo (Middletown, Conn.) and Carlee Putnam (East Lyme, Conn.) each added 13. Elisha Pertillar (Windsor, Conn.) finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. Jill Valley (Orange, Mass.) and Forbasaw Nkamebo (Amherst, Mass.) scored 18 points apiece for Westfield.
USJ will play Colby Sawyer Sun. Jan. 3 in the 1 p.m. tournament consolation game. Westfield State will play Wellesley in the 3 p.m. final. Wellesley defeated Colby Sawyer in Saturday's other game.
