Basketball Edged by Mitchell, 60-55

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Kayla Guest (Newington, Conn.) had her first career double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, but the University of Saint Joseph dropped a 60-55 decision to Mitchell College Thursday in a non-league game.

Mitchell improved to 1-1 on the season; USJ is 0-4.

USJ never led and trailed 17-10 after one quarter, 31-25 at halftime and 45-38 after three. The Blue Jays did whittle away at their deficit in the closing minutes and pulled within 53-50 with 3:13 to play on a three-pointer by Carlee Putnam (Niantic, Conn.) But Amanda Garcia (New Britain, Conn.) had 11 fourth-quarter points for Mitchell including seven in the final three minutes to help the Mariners seal the win.

Stephanie DeJesus (Meriden, Conn.) scored 14 points for St. Joseph and Rajeen Mayo (Middletown, Conn.) had 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Garcia had 17 points and eight rebounds for Mitchell and Diamond Thomas (Hartford, Conn.) scored 14.
