WEST HARTFORD, Conn. Chelsea Vujs (Berlin, Conn.) had 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Western New England women's basketball team to a 74-50 win over the University of Saint Joseph Friday in the season-opener for both at the 18th Annual USJ Blue Jay Invitational.
WNE will face R.I. College in Saturday's 3 p.m. championship game. R.I. College defeated Farmingdale State 71-47 in Friday's other game. USJ will play Farmingdale State in the 1 p.m. consolation game.
Amanda Lopez (Windsor, Conn.) scored 12 points for WNE, Emily Anderson (Rocky Hill, Conn.) had 11 points and eight rebounds and Sammie Battaini (Leominster, Mass.) scored 10 for the Golden Bears.
Vujs had 10 points and nine rebounds in the first half as WNE built a 20-10 lead after one quarter and 36-21 at halftime.
R.I. College 71, Farmingdale State 47: Devin Hill (Killingly, Conn.) had a game-high 22 points to lead the Anchorwomen to a victory in the late game. Rybecca Gonzalez (Pawtucket, R.I.) had 16 points and Abbey Burke (East Greenwich, R.I.) scored 11. RIC led 22-14 after one quarter and 37-22 at halftime.
Tyra Harrison (Baldwin, Mass.) led Farmingdale with 11 points and Marissa Monaco (Bohemia, N.Y.) had eight rebounds.
