WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – University of Saint Joseph senior Patti Sciglimpaglia (Norwalk, Conn.) drove in 10 runs and earned her seventh pitching win of the season to lead USJ to a 12-0, 9-0 sweep of Mitchell Wednesday in a nonconference doubleheader.
USJ improved to 10-4 overall; Mitchell is 2-12. The first game was shorted to five innings by the NCAA mercy rule; the second game went six innings.
Sciglimpaglia went a combined 6-for-7 with six runs scored, three doubles, two homers and 10 RBI. Twin sister Mary Sciglimpaglia (Norwalk, Conn.) went 4-for-6 with a homer and six RBI on the day. Morgan Skoly (Vernon, Conn.) and Kara Klimaszewski (Naugatuck, Conn.) each had four hits on the day and Emily Vigue (Lebanon, Conn.) went 3-for-5 and hit her first collegiate home run in the second game.
In the opener, Sciglimpaglia allowed two hits, both first-innings singles, walked none and struck out six. She improved to 7-0 on the season, lowered her ERA to 0.29 and has pitched 37 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.
Mary Sciglimpaglia hit a three-run homer in the first inning, Patti Sciglimpaglia hit a three-run homer in the third and the Blue Jays used eight hits to score six time in the fourth.
Danielle Circosta (Feeding Hills, Mass.) pitched a one-hitter for USJ in the late game. She walked one in six innings and struck out four.
Morgan Skoly had four hits and scored three runs for USJ in the second game. Patti Sciglimpaglia had a three-run double in second and an RBI-double in the fourth. Vigue made it 7-0 USJ with a solo homer in the fifth and Patti Sciglimpaglia ended the day with a two-run homer in the sixth.
USJ is next scheduled to play Saturday, April 1, when it hosts Emmanuel in a GNAC doubleheader at noon. Mitchell also plays a noon doubleheader Saturday, travelling to Lesley for a NECC twinbill.
