Streak Ends; USJ Gets One Win vs. Emerson

BOSTON, Mass. – University of Saint Joseph freshman Mary Sciglimpaglia (Norwalk, Conn.) hit her first collegiate home run, doubled and drove in three runs as the Blue Jays defeated Emerson 6-3 in the second game of a great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader Thursday in Boston.

USJ had its school-record 12-game winning streak ended in the first game as Emerson, which leads the GNAC, won 6-3. Saint Joseph is 26-10 overall and 14-6 in the GNAC after the split. Emerson is 18-12 and 15-3.

St. Joseph made up for the first game disappointment immediately in game two, scoring four times in the first inning. Haley McCall (Lebanon, Conn.) singled to lead off and went to third when Stephanie Valerio (Wolcott, Conn.) had her bunt misplayed and reached second. McCall scored when Emily Hummel (Hebron, Conn.) grounded out and Valerio came home on a Patti Sciglimpaglia (Norwalk, Conn.) single. Mary Sciglimpaglia doubled to score her sister Patti and she herself came home on an error.

Nikki Delaney homered for Emerson in a two-run second inning that cut the lead to 4-2, but USJ got the runs right back in the third. Patti Sciglimpaglia singled to center and Mary Sciglimpaglia followed with a homer to left center to make it 6-2. Emerson picked up its final run in the sixth.

Hummel (12-4, 3.01 ERA) pitched her seventh complete game of the season for the victory. McCall started two double plays in the game at second base. In the fifth she caught a line drive and tossed to Valerio at second to double up a runner. And in the seventh, another line drive catch turned into a game-ending double play when she threw to Shauna Sullivan (Rocky Hill, Conn.) at first. McCall also finished with three hits.

Patti Sciglimpaglia had three hits in the opener, but USJ stranded nine runners. The Blue Jays got six hits and drew six walks, but went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

Saint Joseph plays at Lasell, Sat. April 20 in a noon doubleheader. The Blue Jays play their final games of the regular season, Sun. April 21 when they host Rivier at noon.
