Vigue Earns Shutout Against Mount Ida
WEST HARTFORD – University of Saint Joseph freshman Emily Vigue (Lebanon, Conn.) pitched a four-hitter for her first collegiate shutout as USJ defeated Mount Ida 2-0 Saturday in the first game of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader at St. Joseph.
Mount Ida took the late game, 8-5. USJ finished the day 13-9 overall and 5-5 in the GNAC. Mount Ida is 9-12 overall and 3-7 in the conference.
Vigue scattered four singles, walked two and struck out three. St. Joseph scored single runs in the first two innings to account for all the scoring. In the first inning, USJ senior shortstop Stephanie Valerio (Wolcott, Conn.) drew a one-out walk , stole second and scored on an error. In the second, Mary Sciglimpaglia (Norwalk, Conn.) hit a one-out double, went to third on a single by Vigue and came home on a single by Haley McCall (Lebanon, Conn.) McCall and Mary Sciglimpaglia each had two hits for USJ.
In the second game, Mount Ida's Gina Onorevole (Lafayette, N.J.) hit a two-out, three-run double in the top of the fifth to turn a 5-3 deficit into a 6-5 lead to key the Mustangs win. Shauna Sullivan (Rocky Hill, Conn.) had three hits for USJ, which had 12 hits for the game. Valerio, Patti and Mary Sciglimpaglia and Ashley Gall (Stafford Springs, Conn.) each had two hits for the Blue Jays.
St. Joseph plays at Emmanuel, Sun. April 7 in a GNAC doubleheader beginning at noon. The Blue Jays next play home Tue. April 9 when they host Daniel Webster for two games at 3 p.m.
