WINTHROP, Mass. – Freshman David Kavanaugh (West Hartford, Conn.) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's cross country team was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Rookie of the Week, announced Tuesday afternoon by conference officials. It's the first career GNAC Weekly honor for Kavanaugh, and the first-ever for the USJ men's cross country team.
Kavanaugh won the Mitchell Invitational Saturday with a 5K time of 17:34.5 (5:39 mile pace), nearly five seconds in front of second-place finisher Ricky Elmer of Elms College, and nearly 20 seconds in front of the next highest GNAC runner. The win was crucial in the men's second-place overall finish, the highest ever finish for the USJ men's cross country team. Kavanaugh and the team received some additional hardware for their efforts.
The USJ men's and women's cross country teams will be back in action next Saturday, September 21 in the Blazer Classic Invitational, hosted by Elms College at Chicopee Memorial State Park in Chicopee, Mass. The action is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m.
