WESTON, Mass. - Three members of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's swimming & diving team received All-New England honors as part of the 2019-2020 New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships, announced by the association last week.
Sophomore Jacob Wyse (Broad Brook, Conn.) and freshman diver Zachary Nielsen (Berlin, Conn.) were named to the All-New England Team, which requires a top-eight finish in an individual event, or a top-four finish as part of a relay team. Wyse and Nielsen were two of 76 male swimmers who made the All-New England Team. It is the second All-New England team honor for Wyse. Sophomore captain Jack Monroe (Waterbury, Conn.) was also one of 35 athletes named to the NEISDA All-Sportsmanship team.
The Blue Jays closed the 2019-2020 campaign, just their second in program history, with their second consecutive ninth-place finish in the NEISDA Championships. The weekend was highlighted by numerous broken schools records, and Wyse's sensational performance in the pool, earning a gold medal with his first-place swim in the 400-yard Individual Medley (IM). It was the first gold medal in school history, and his third career NEISDA medal, after earning a bronze last year, and a silver in the 200 IM this year (.02 seconds away from grabbing two gold medals in one weekend). Wyse made it all look easy, extending his lead more than a second at a time in the first, fifth and sixth legs of his gold medal triumph. He finished in 4:13.13, breaking the varsity school record in the 400 IM, and claiming victory by well over three seconds. Monroe and Nielsen (in his first NEISDA meet) also made contributions throughout the weekend.
