WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Freshman diver Zachary Nielsen (Berlin, Conn.) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's swimming and diving team, was selected as the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Diver of the Week for week eight of the 2019-2020 season, announced Wednesday by the association. It marks the first NEISDA nod of Nielsen's career.
In his first collegiate performance on the three-meter board, Nielsen finished in sixth place with a score of 137.45. On the one-meter board, he finished sixth with a score of 157.25, half a point behind fifth place. Nielsen, under the direction of head coach Brenda Straker, and diving coach Todd Watkins, has shown steady improvement on the board as the season has gone on. USJ placed fifth of six schools in the Fifth Annual Connecticut Cup, hosted by Wesleyan University on December 7.
Prior to his diving career at Saint Joseph, Nielsen dove for the Redcoats of Berlin High School, in Berlin, Conn. He is majoring in English.
The Blue Jays are headed south for their annual winter trip to Florida. USJ will be training in Deerfield Beach from January 2 to January 9. They will return to the pool for competition on Friday, January 10 at Plymouth State at 3:30 p.m.
