Hummel, Mary Sciglimpaglia Named All-Tournament
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – University of Saint Joseph senior Emily Hummel (Hebron, Conn.) and freshman Mary Sciglimpaglia (Norwalk, Conn.) were named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference All-Tournament softball team Sunday.
USJ hosted the final six games of the tournament Friday through Sunday as the highest remaining seed (third) after Wednesday’s first round. The Blue Jays were one of the last three teams left, but were eliminated with a 5-3 loss to Suffolk Saturday. USJ finished 32-12 and set a single-season school record for wins.
Hummel batted .583 (7-for-12) with three runs scored and two RBI in four games. Sciglimpaglia was 5-for-11 (.455) with three RBI, picked off one runner from the catcher position and threw out the only runner who tried to steal against her.
St. Joseph’s College of Maine won its third consecutive GNAC championship Sunday by defeating Suffolk, 8-0 in five innings. The Monks qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament and will play in one of eight, eight-team regional tournaments beginning May 9 at a site to be determined. The eight regional winners play in the national championship round May 17-21 at Eau Claire, Wis.
St. Joseph’s College senior pitcher Kayla Vannah pitched a four-hitter Sunday and was named Tournament MVP after throwing a total of 18.1 scoreless innings in the tournament. Also named All-Tournament were: Danyell Shufelt,Theresa Hendrix and Lindsay Moore from St. Joseph’s; Alicia Gonnella, Sarah Chasse and Erin McAndrews from Suffolk; and, Kirstie Clark and Marissa Mercier from Rivier.
